Lake Inverell and its Pelicans The Australian pelican is a large waterbird widespread on the inland and coastal waters of Australia and New Guinea, also in Fiji, parts of Indonesia and as a vagrant in New Zealand. Our pelican’s as we know them from Lake Inverell are predominantly white birds with black wings and a pink bill. The pelican has been credited with having the longest bill of any living bird. It mainly eats fish, but will also consume birds and scavenge for scraps if the opportunity arises. The Australian pelican is medium-sized by pelican standards, with a wingspan of 2.3 to 2.6 m. Weight can range from 4 to 13 kg, although most of these pelicans weigh between 4.54 and 7.7 kg. The average weight of Australian pelicans is about 5.5 kg, making this the heaviest Australian flying bird species on average. The pale, pinkish bill is enormous, even by pelican standards, and is the largest bill in the avian world. Females are slightly smaller with a notably smaller bill, which can measure as small as 34.6 cm at maturity. The total length is boosted by the bill to 152–188 cm. It has the largest bill of any bird. He won the Aussie champs and has ridden for Australia but he moved to Germany in his early teens and much of his development in cycling was thanks to the German system. Haussler’s infamous loss to Mark Cavendish in the Milan San Remo certainly served as motivation for Heinrich Haussler who beat one of the best young and upcoming sprinters to win the elite men’s Australian national road championship. Haussler won the sprint despite a mechanical at the finish, when his chain came off, just as he was going to cross the line. In the last 100m where it was like edge to edge I thought, ‘no, this is not going to happen to me again. It just couldn’t. I was just trying to get everything out of my legs to get to that line first,” a jubilant 30-year-old Haussler said. “It worked out perfectly in the last kilometre because Caleb Ewan followed an attack and I was on his wheel. Returning to INVERELL, NSW, he quickly developed a reputation for being skilled at finding and tempting big cod and has since amassed plenty of metre-plus captures and a reputation as an excellent angler. Jackson Haussler has earned himself a reputation as an expert on the Murray Cod and is well known for his enviromental care and attitude to help protecting our rivers and dams. Jackson’s Top Murray Cod Fishing Tips Unlike most Murray Cod lure fishing addicts, Jackson prefers to fish sub-surface, finding the surprise, unseen hit of a cod exhilarating. There are multiple public access points on the upper Gwydir River above Copeton Dam, drive in and start walking! Google Earth is a great tool for exploring the area and identifying the large, deep holes where big fish reside. Although he targets the big holes, Jackson finds that most of his big cod come from the head and tail of the pool in water of 1-3m deep, or from weed beds in similar depths. Stealth is important, approach the water quietly and avoid spooking fish. Even splashy lure landings can be enough to alert the fish and deter the bite. March, April and May seem to be the months when more large cod are willing to take lures than other months of the year. Keep a close eye on the weather – periods from 2-3 days before significant rainfall as well as during and 2-3 days after rainfall events often bring a hot bite. Fishing around a full moon and timing to coincide with moon rise or moon set has accounted for around 75% of Jackson’s quality Murray cod, the other 25% coming from periods around a rainfall event. A good strategy is to arrive a couple of hours before dawn and fish the pre-light periods, that’s when a lot of fish come up. As the sun rises they can often go down deeper. Look for feeding fish, don’t waste lots of time making tons of casts at a single spot. Fish in tight to structure in the shallows and on weed beds are likely to be feeding and if they don’t take your lure in 4-5 casts they’re either aware of you or aren’t interested. Move on quickly to the next pool and start casting again. It’s important to have sufficient tension on the drag to set the hooks, but not so much that the fish will smash the line off. Jackson’s Gwydir Cod Fishing Tackle A medium action 7’5” Murasame rod, Daiwa Ryoga 1520 reel, 40lb braid and 40lb leader is perfect for rivers, creeks and impoundments. Jackson’s Murray Cod Fishing Lures The Megabass Vatalion 190mm is a deadly lure that comes in floating and slow sinking models. They can also be fitted with chin weights when it’s necessary to fish deeper to cod. Jackson prefers the slow sinking model because it gets to the fish faster and can be worked a little quicker. It’s typically worked through shallow water on a slow roll with occasional pauses – important as a lot of fish hit the lure while it’s stationary. This lure is like the Jackall Giganterel, but is less familiar to the fish, which helps it to get more bites. Megabass Big M 2.0 is a great lure when the cod are feeding near the surface. They’re long casting and can be allowed to sit on the water for a few seconds before slow rolling them back. Megabass Magdraft 8” can be allowed to sink to whatever depth you need, slow rolled back with plenty of pauses, you’ll feel the lure working through the rod. Michael O'Sullivan arrived back in Inverell, at the McLean Care Village in 2017, being transferred from the Armidale District Hospital by ambulance. They told him to find a place where he could die in peace and his good friend John Watts brought him to Inverell for Michael to spend the final days of his life in palliative care after suffering from a long illness. What happened over the next twelve months has been a real miracle. Music has always been Michael’s great passion and it was no surprise when Michael had the chance, that he joined Inverell’s bush band, Bandy Bill and Co. He started to write some wonderful songs for the Band and recorded a number of these songs including Modern Day Swaggie and Spinnin’ Yarns. Michael’s song, Happy Birthday Australia found its way onto Macca’s Australia All Over Volume II and sold close to 90000 copies. The album was the curtain raiser for the iconic We Are Australian. "Best is Yet to Come" Michael’s first individual release was also a great success. He wrote and recorded several tracks that are featured on eight artist compilation albums. Six of them are featured with ABC Radio’s Australia All Over program. The songs include Macca on a Sunday Morning, Rain on a Tin Roof and Blue Outback Skies. This is the remarkable life story of a talented singer/songwriter, it is a story written by life that features the highs and the lows in a man's life that subsequently was spared and a certain death sentence was turned around with the help of his friends and his love of music.
